The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal initiative designed to reduce financial barriers to dental care for eligible Canadian residents. This program provides partial coverage for dental expenses to those without private dental benefits and with household incomes below $90,000 annually.

Please note: The CDCP does not provide free dental care—it covers a portion of your treatment costs.

Am I eligible for the CDCP?

We do not handle registration or determine eligibility for the CDCP. To check if you qualify, please contact the CDCP hotline at 1-833-537-4342 (TTY: 1-833-677-6262) or visit a Service Canada office.

What services are covered under the CDCP?

The CDCP does not cover all dental services and may not fully cover the treatment you require. According to the Government of Canada, covered services may include:

• Preventive care: Cleanings (scaling), sealants, fluoride
• Diagnostic services: Examinations, X-rays
• Restorative services: Fillings
• Endodontic services: Root canals
• Prosthodontic services: Complete and partial dentures
• Periodontal services: Deep scaling
• Oral surgery: Extractions

Will I have to pay anything out of pocket?

Yes. While the plan may state "100% coverage," this only applies to CDCP fees, which are different from the Ontario Dental Association Fee Guide that we follow. The difference between these fees must be covered by the patient.

The government has indicated efforts to address this gap, but at this time, patients must pay the difference. If future changes cover this amount, we will not be able to issue refunds. You may be able to claim the difference through SunLife, but details on this are still unclear.

Can you tell me how much I will have to pay?

We will make every effort to submit pre-determinations to check coverage in advance. However, this may not always be possible, and all co-payments will be due at the time of treatment.

If you choose to proceed with treatment without a pre-determination (e.g., for a painful broken tooth that requires immediate attention) and coverage is denied by SunLife, you will be responsible for the full cost of the treatment.

What happens if I don’t pay my co-pay?

Failure to pay the required co-pay may result in:

• The amount being sent to collections
• No further appointments being scheduled at our office

To register with our office under CDCP, you will be required to sign a notice confirming that you have read and understand this policy.
